Minimise Food Waste

We're all guilty of it. Whether it's forgetting about the yoghurt in the back of the fridge or buying too much fresh produce at the start of the week - we waste 20% of our precious food (that's over $1,000 of food per household each year - I know I'd rather spend it on other things, like TRAVEL!) (http://www.foodwise.com.au/foodwaste/food-waste-fast-facts/). Over the next few weeks I'll be providing some tips to help stop food wastage. Firstly, the best way to reduce waste is to plan your meals for the week. Look at what you already have in the fridge/pantry/freezer. What can you use here? How long before this food will go off? Base your shopping list around what you already have. Think about which food items are more perishable - like fresh fruit, vegetables and dairy. Things like your salad vegetables and bananas will go off before your more sturdy foods like potatoes, pumpkins and melons. So base your weekly meal plan around this. If you notice your fruit is going off before you plan on eating them, you can peel and freeze it to have in smoothies at a later date.
