Star Foods

As I walk around the supermarket lately I am noticing that more and more food packets are carrying the health star rating. So what is it? It's the winner in the contest between the 'traffic light system' and 'star rating' initiatives, which are to be added to packaged foods in order to help the consumers compare similar products and make better choices. The rating starts from 1/2 star all the way up to 5 stars and unlike other 'rating' systems it takes into account more than one nutrient. It looks at energy, saturated fat, sugars, sodium and nutrient (ie fibre, calcium, protein) per 100g/100mL/pack. The government recognises that it's tricky to read and understand the current food labels and some can be very misleading (since when does one chocolate bar account for three serves, who's going to eat it over three sittings - not me). This new system's aim is to fix this problem and I think it will help. My new favourite drink scored 5 stars (which is actually pretty amazing, I can't see many other foods scoring this high, the chips I ate the other day, certainly didn't).
